  If you are dating an alcoholic , it can be hard to know how to help. You are probably full of admiration and hope, and want to help him get better. But if you try to do too much, he will resent you for it. Here are some tips on what NOT to do: Do not try to force him into treatment. He is not ready for that yet, and it is not your place to make decisions for him. If he wants help, he will get it on his own time. When you are dating someone with alcohol, do not tell him that he is powerless over alcohol or drugs. He may not see it this way at all — maybe he feels like he is just as strong as anybody else and is going through a bad patch.
